  • WELCOME!

Thanks for checking out my blog. I am embarking on a new journey of self exploration and for the next few months I will be conducting a skin experiment using the REDEFINE anti-aging line of products from Rodan + Fields.

My 35th birthday is just days away (March 17th) and I am in search of the fountain of youth. Not actually, but I'd like to start taking better care of skin and myself. For the past year, several trusted friends have been telling me about their experience and encouraging me to do the same. On top of that, every magazine I open has an awesome product review about R+F; they are everywhere! So, I have agreed to a trial period and I'm excited to find out if all the hype is fact or fiction.

Skin care is no joke, not to mention expensive. Therefore, I promise to be genuine in all my feedback. Although I am currently signed on as a consultant, before I sell you anything I am going to execute this experiment to prove to myself that these are the kind of products I want to recommend to my friends and family.

In the interest of full disclosure, please note that my headshot to the left has been retouched.

What does Rodan and Fields Cost?

A lot. Well, for me I consider $100.00 +/month to be expensive. Here’s the difference… IT WORKS. Think of it like this, if you spend $50.00/month on products that don’t work, not only will you purchase more (like I was doing), but you’re basically throwing money away. Yes, Rodan + Fields is expensive, but it’s worth it.

I added up all the products I was using prior to REDEFINE and was shocked to realize that I was using (and spending) more. My personal skin routine was over $150.00/month and was way complicated.

You will notice that I was using some well known and expensive brands, with great reputations. I do want to underscore that I’m not saying they don’t work, just that they didn’t work for me. There are several products that are designed to fight pimples and since those didn’t work, I was also using several products to reduce scarring and fade brown spots (after I got the pimples). Worse than the fact that I was spending a ton of cash, was that the routine was just  too complex. If I got a zit, I did X; if I had a scar, I did X; if I was too dry I did X and so on. I was ordering my products online to get the best possible prices, so I actually thought I was coming out ahead.

Obagi, Skin Ceuticals and Cosmetic Skin Solutions didn

Well over $150.00/month of wasted products. Wasted, because they didn’t work.

My new personal Rodan + Fields skin routine costs about $110.00/month.

Rodan + Fields REDEFINE regimen = $193.00 (2 month supply)

REDEFINE is a comprehensive skincare regimen that layers cosmetic ingredients and proven peptide technology to help defend against and reduce the visible signs of aging for noticeably firmer, smoother, flawless-looking skin. The REDEFINE Regimen features four full-size products: Daily Cleansing Mask 125 mL/4.2 Fl.Oz., Pore Minimizing Toner 125 mL/4.2 Fl.Oz., Triple Defense Treatment SPF 30 30 mL/1.0 Fl.Oz., and Overnight Restorative Cream 30 mL/1.0 Fl.Oz.

Rodan + Fields UNBLEMISH Dual Intensive Acne Treatment = $86.00 (4 month supply)

Unique dual chamber delivery system ensures maximum efficacy of benzoyl peroxide deep into the pores, killing bacteria and stopping breakouts before they start. 2 x 15 mL/.5 Fl.Oz. I use this as a spot treatment if I see a red bump coming on, so I expect this container to last 4 months.

My new personal R+F skin routine costs $110.00/month.

Can Washing My Face with Hot Water Effect Pore Size?

When I was little, I remember reading a book that my mom had on beauty. It claimed that the temperate of the water could actual contribute to the size of my pores. I have recently learned that this is just not true.

Pores are a very important part of our skin, because they allow us to regular our temperate by sweating. Unfortunately,  they can easily become clogged, causing zits, blackheads and other unsightly uglies.

While steaming or using hot water to at the beginning of your cleaning process (but only after you have removed your make up) will help to loosen dirty or debris, it is nothing more that an effective way to help clean your skin. But beware, too hot may cause irritation and drying.

So there you have it, but don’t just take my word, hop on your computer and do the research.

Does Rodan + Fields Really Work?

YES! After my official 8 week experiment, I am saying yes, RODAN + FIELDS does work. For me personally, it was not an overnight process. Some of my friends had the same amazing results in just 2 weeks! Truthfully, I don’t care because no other products have even come close to fulfilling what the packaging promised.

Rodan and Fields’ REDEFINE promised and delivered on the following results:

  • Smaller pores – YES!
  • Reduced appearance of fine lines – YES!
  • Softer skin – YES!
  • More even tone / Reduced redness – Yes!
  • Zit zapper – YES!
  • Parenthesis – No so much

Also, I am less oily, but that was just a bonus. I am told that over time, the results will continue to improve. This makes total sense because if I don’t get new zits then I won’t get anymore scarring. Also, the brown spots and existing scarring will continue to fade. That last point is true even without the products, because your skin naturally will renew itself. This way, I am just helping the process move along faster.

The Difference Between Drugs, Cosmetics and Cosmeceuticals, oh my!

All my life I have been reading packaging and literally buying into all the hype. I didn’t even realize there are specific classifications for all the products at my local Walgreens. I guess I was at the corner of uninformed and confused. In my recent research I have learned a bit about how the FDA differentiates these types of products and that all too often many of the companies we trust (thanks to savvy marketing) violate these laws by making false claims that can be misleading.

As quoted from the book, Write Your Skin A Prescription for Change, according to the FDA, “The difference between a cosmetic and drug is determined by a product’s intended use”.

To help articulate this point, the book sites this simple shampoo example:

  1. Shampoo intended for cleansing the hair is a cosmetic.
  2. Shampoo formulated to contain an OTC  or prescription drug at an effective level, even though the intended use is still as a shampoo, the shampoo is consider treatment for dandruff, therefore is a drug.
  3. Shampoo containing active drug ingredients, such as salicylic acid may go into products at lower concentrations, making the a cosmetic, (not a drug).

Therefore, it’s a combination of the ingredient, the concentrations, the claims and the intended use that determines what category the product falls into.

Redefine Great Skin, Week 7 Results

Here we go again on the roller coaster of great skin. This week has been awesome! Seriously, the best skin of my adult life. I do have a new brown spot from last week’s explosion of new zits, but one casualty isn’t bad for me. Let’s hope this phase lasts.

To review, I have been using the Rodan + Fields Redefine line, plus their Macro Exfoliator once a week and Multi-Function Eye Cream daily.

Here is what I see:

  • Smaller pores
  • Less oily then before experiment, but more oily than weeks 1 – 3
  • Healing of past brown spots
  • No new zits or redness
  • Not sure what to make of reduced fine lines, but I think they are marginally better
  • No changes on my parenthesis

It’s a good thing I post these while still half asleep. I don’t think I would have the courage otherwise. My lovely boyfriend just told me this looks like a ransom photo. Although this photo was not retouched in anyway, I do think it does help to stand in the beautiful available sunlight. It’s going to be a great day:-)
